I am a half Indian, half Canadian male from Toronto. I have to say, this restaurant is the worst Indian restaurant I've ever been to. The Butter Chicken, probably the most popular Indian Dish, was not even worthy of my dogs bowl. This restaurant is an insult to Indian Culture. In a city where Indian people are already not liked, this restaurant only makes matters worse.

Thanks for your comments - I'll be sure to pass them on to the restaurant in question!

Tonight (October 22nd 2007), I recieved terrible service at Shafiq's. This was not the first time. After the meals were put so forcefully on the table that the dishes rattled I vowed never to return. When we arrived at 6PM (dinner hour) there were renovations underway. This included a saw so loud that I could not have a conversation with my partner. The other patrons were alarmed. When we asked the young waitress how long she expected the power saw to be on for, she was insanely rude.
As for the food, I've had much, much better.

I would like to protest the remarks of S.Patel. My husband and I frequent this restaurant and have had nothing but the best service. I am not of Indian decent, nor is my husband, but we enjoy the delectable food from Taste of India, as we are Indian food enthusiasts. Also, how dare you suggest that Peterborough is a racist or racially non acceptant city! I will have you know, that it is quite the contrary. Often people who make such generalization are insecure about their own heritage.

I'm sorry for the derail but I have to say that while I agree it's an unfair generalization and wouldn't necessarily tar and feather all of Peterborough as a racist community, insinuating that it's somehow the exact opposite is equally ignorant.

In fact, I personally find that notion far more insulting than the slack jawed stares and sometimes worse that occurs when in public as a visible minority here.

As horrible and wrong as racism is, people who act out on those impulses are, at the core of it, at least being honest. And I find that infinitely less offensive than the often political, delusional, disingenuous and self-congratulatory back patting that occurs when race and ethnicity become issues on a community scale or a national one.

I have been to that restaurant alot of times and i have to say the service is excellent and I was served by a young waitress and she was excellent and very polite and the butter chicken isnt exactly what it should be but its one of the best butter chicken I have ever had. I think people should really try that restaurant and if you dont like something about it then stop complaining. Plus if u are not going to go back there then why are you posting comments that is not true.

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and it certainly is interesting to hear what other people have experienced. Thanks for your comments and let's keep them friendly and clean!

We live in Lakefield and this is one of our favourite restaurant. We went to a lot of Indian Restaurant in Toronto but this is one is unique in its own way. We go there all the time and we have a great time all the time.

The vegetarian curries here are legendary. It would be very hard to find a better korma for over 100 km!

Sept 20 2008,
We went to the Taste of India and everything was excellent. the service was wonderful and we did a substitution without any problem. the food remaining was packed up for us without complaint. The atmosphere was lovely and we will be back with our friends.

Never EVER again!

In the 1.5 hours we waited for our food, we could have driven to downtown Toronto, and had a quality Indian meal there instead. The service was awful. Our table was completely ignored for over an hour. No drink refills or explanation as to why it was taking so long for our food to arrive. The owner was more interested in packing the place full than serving the people that were already in there. Did I mention that this was a birthday meal for my Mom? Severely disappointing. We were just about to get up and leave when the meal finally arrived (with no apology). On the menu: burnt Onion Bhajhi, overly sweet Butter Chicken, dried out Nan bread, bland Mix Vegetable Curry, and the only redeeming dish: Mattar Paneer.

Bottom line: extremely poor service, and overly priced, extremely disappointing food. Make the trip to Toronto instead (Mother India at Queen W and Lansdowne).
